After a brief lull, the cyber crime branch has once again registered a substantial rise in the number of cases since the beginning of the year.
The special unit registered over 45 cases while it has received about 279 complaints since January 1. The year 2015 was relatively calmer with 117 FIRs registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act while they have received a total of 550 complaints. This year, the cyber crime team has conducted preliminary investigations in 50 cases and forwarded them to respective police stations.
Deputy commissioner of police (cyber, economics) Deepak Sakore said, “We filed cases proactively in some matters like the one against a fake BPO from Pune. We are studying all the complaints received so far in detail.”
Most complaints came from women, who approached the police after they were threatened or defamed by persons known to them on social networking sites or were cheated on matrimonial sites.
